Fight against climate change is impossible without nuclear energy, International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Yukiya Amano said during his speech at the 23rd World Energy Congress in Istanbul.
He said that the use of nuclear energy increases, and construction of 60 nuclear power plants in the world continues.
Amano noted that the nuclear energy sector will grow by seven percent by 2050.
The decision to use the nuclear energy is made by the government, and the IAEA respects this choice, he said.
Nuclear power plants are very useful for the sustainable development of countries, Amano added.
Nuclear energy cannot be confined only to Western countries, the IAEA must make it accessible for the developing countries as well, he said.
The 23rd World Energy Congress kicked off Oct. 9 and will end Oct. 13. Turkey’s Prime Minister Binali Yildirim and Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Berat Albayrak are the initiators of the event.
The event is being held under the chairmanship of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
