Japan’s Kawasaki Heavy Industries and Marubeni Utility Services have started modernization of the Fergana thermal power plant in Uzbekistan, the press service of Uzbekenergo, an Uzbek state-run energy company, reported.
The $83.6 million project envisages construction of gas turbine units (GTUs) at the Fergana thermal power plant with capacity of 17 megawatts and at one of the city boiler houses with capacity of 7 megawatts.
The Japanese consortium will implement supply of the technological equipment and its installation on a turnkey basis.
The project will be financed through the grants of Japan’s New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) in the amount of $49.5 million and own funds of the Uzbekenergo.
It is expected that the project’s implementation will increase the reliability and qualitative power supply of the industrial facilities and the population of the Fergana Valley, one of the most densely populated in Uzbekistan.
The Fergana thermal power plant, the only power plant in the Fergana Valley, was commissioned in 1979 with installed capacity of 305 megawatts.
