Azerbaijan plans to soon carry out accurate calculations of the total potential of wind energy in the Karabakh region, Spokesman for the Azerbaijani Ministry of Energy Jahid Mikayilov told Trend on Jan.8.
Mikayilov said that in the mountainous part of Karabakh, at an altitude of 100 m, there are large territories with an average annual wind speed of 7-8 m/sec.
"According to the Globalwindatlas.info platform, the average annual wind speed in the Kalbajar and Lachin districts bordering Armenia reaches 10 meters per second," he noted.
The spokesman stressed that calculations of the total potential of wind energy will be carried out by installing relevant measuring observation stations.
“According to preliminary data, the total potential of solar energy in these territories is 3,000-4,000 megawatts,” he reminded.
From January through November 2020, 22.97 million kilowatt-hours of electricity were generated in Azerbaijan, which is 4.8 percent more compared to the same period of 2019.
Of these, 985.8 million kilowatt-hours accounted for hydroelectric power plants, which is 32.3 percent less than in the first 11 months of 2019. Some 21.1 billion kilowatt-hours were produced by thermal power plants, which is 8 percent more than in the same period of the previous year.
From January through November 2020, the country produced 44 million kilowatt-hours of solar energy, which is 8.1 percent more than in the same period of last year.
