Iran's electricity generation capacity will increase to 120,000 megawatt-hours by March 20, 2025, Iranian Deputy Energy Minister Homayoun Haeri said, Trend reports citing Ministry of Energy of Iran.
According to him, in this regard, 900 big projects in the electricity sector will be implemented in Iran over the next 4 years.
“More than 7.95 trillion rials (about $190 million) will be spent on these projects. As a result, the country’s electricity generation capacity will increase by about 35,000 megawatt-hours,” the deputy minister added.
Haeri noted that the power plants with a capacity to generate 15,000 megawatt-hours of electricity, will be built by Iran’s Thermal Power Plants Holding Company (TPPH), the power plants with a capacity to generate 10,000 megawatt hours of electricity will be built in cooperation with major industrial companies, while 10,000 megawatt-hours of electricity will be obtained. following the construction and launch of renewable energy plants.
The deputy minister also said that by the summer of next Iranian year, more than 6,000 megawatt-hours of electricity will be added to the country's electricity generation capacity. Its 4,949 megawatt-hours will be obtained through new energy units, and 1,113 megawatt-hours after certain changes are made to the existing energy units of the thermal power plants.
So far, a total of 583 units in 129 thermal power plants have been built in Iran. At present, 67 percent of Iran's thermal power plants are owned by the private sector, while 33 percent by the public sector.
The total capacity of Iran's power plants (thermal, hydroelectric, nuclear, renewable, and so on) is currently about 85,559 megawatt-hours. About 81 percent of which is accounted for thermal power plants.
The capacity of combined cycle power units is currently 31,179 megawatt-hours (36.4 percent), gas units – 21,992 megawatt-hours (25.7 percent), and steam units – 15,829 megawatt-hours (18.5 percent).
