BAKU, Azerbaijan, October 10. Iran’s largest underground gas storage facility, Shourijeh D, is being pumped with gas at a rate of 12 million cubic meters per day, Executive Director of Iran’s Central Oil Fields Company (ICOFC), Mehdi Heydari said, Trend reports.

Heydari said that the gas filling process takes place for eight months of the year, and that the facility can deliver 18 million cubic meters of gas per day for four months when the demand is high. He added that since March 21, 2023, more than 1.8 billion cubic meters of gas have been injected into the facility, and that by November 21, 2023, the volume will exceed 2 billion cubic meters.

The facility, located in Razavi Khorasan Province, was launched in two phases. The first phase was completed in 2022 with a capacity of 2.25 billion cubic meters. The second phase was initiated in December 2021 with a contract worth $2.2 billion between Iran Gas Engineering and Development Company and MAPNA Group.

The contract involves drilling 28 wells, building a gas collection center, and installing compressors and other equipment. The second phase is expected to be completed in three years and to operate for 20 years.

Once both phases finished, Shourijeh D will be able to store up to 4.5 billion cubic meters of gas, which will help ensure the country’s gas supply during the cold months.
