BAKU, Azerbaijan, May 27. In the first half of the 2024/2025 financial year, Axpo once again supplied 40% of Switzerland’s electricity consumption, reaffirming its critical role in the country’s energy system, Trend reports.
Demonstrating its long-term commitment to the Swiss market, Axpo increased its shareholding in Swiss energy service provider CKW by 4.5%, bringing its total stake to 85.6%. The move comes alongside key investment decisions aimed at strengthening Switzerland’s future energy supply. Over the coming years, Axpo plans to invest more than CHF 2 billion in the country’s energy infrastructure, including continued operations at the Beznau nuclear power plant until at least 2033.
As part of its national energy strategy, Axpo is also set to construct a backup power plant at the Rhine port of Auhafen Muttenz. The facility, commissioned through a federal government tender, is designed to stabilize the electricity grid in the event of supply shortages.
Beyond Switzerland, the Axpo Group continued its rapid expansion in renewable energy generation across Europe. During the reporting period, Axpo maintained its leadership in the international customer and trading business, managing and marketing a 93 terawatt-hour portfolio of wind, solar, biomass, and hydropower assets across Europe and the USA (as of 30 September 2024).
Despite heightened political and economic uncertainty, which has dampened corporate appetite for long-term commitments, Axpo secured several key power purchase agreements (PPAs), reinforcing its position as a reliable partner for clean energy.
Liquefied natural gas (LNG) remains a strategic component of Axpo’s energy portfolio. With more than two decades of experience in gas transport and trading—and over 10 years specifically in LNG—Axpo continues to strengthen its role in securing Europe’s and Switzerland’s energy needs. LNG is also proving vital for the shipping sector as a transitional fuel on the path to carbon-free maritime transport. Axpo is actively expanding its services to industrial gas customers, further enhancing its presence in this critical energy segment.
