BAKU, Azerbaijan, May 24. Azerbaijan's long-term national decarbonization strategy should reconcile the deadlines for achieving zero emissions (NetZero) by all segments of the country's transport sector, which will allow Azerbaijan to guarantee green transportation of cargoes, an informed source at Baku International Sea Trade Port (BISTP) told Trend.

“BISTP has outlined an exit to NetZero by 2035, but the timeline for Azerbaijan Railways CJSC and Caspian Shipping Company CJSC to achieve carbon neutrality is not clear yet. Determination of the schedule is necessary, as then Azerbaijan can ensure “green” transportation of cargoes, which is important for the fulfillment of its international obligations,” the source noted.

According to him, on shipping issues, Azerbaijan is currently discussing the use of clean fuels such as hydrogen and ammonia, which also meet the step-by-step requirements of the transition to such fuel from the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

To note, the IMO plans to agree on a “target standard for marine fuel” and a “greenhouse gas pricing mechanism” by 2025, which should be taken into account by ports and shipping companies of IMO member countries (Azerbaijan has joined this organization, and 246 ships of the country have an IMO identification number).

The development of Azerbaijan's long-term decarbonization strategy will be completed by 2025, and in particular, it will take into account the decisions to be taken at COP29 in Baku.
