International cotton fair opens in Ashgabat

Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov addressing the participants of the International Cotton Fair (23-24 November) opening on Nov.23, expressed confidence that the event will have great significance for development of country's agriculture, cotton processing industry, expansion of research.

Turkmenpagta (Turkmencotton) State Concern, The State commodity and raw materials exchange of Turkmenistan and State Chamber of Commodity and Industry are event organizers.

Cotton growing is a strategic sector of Turkmenistan's agricultural industry. At the same time, cotton is not only the basic raw material for the national textile industry, but also the most valuable export product.

Turkmenistan intends to further expand the geography of partnerships in this sphere.

The auction and negotiations are reguarly held in Ashgabat between exporters and consumers of Turkmen 'white gold'.

Turkmenistan has prepared more than 1 million tons of raw cotton this year. Traditionally the country exports it to China, Russia, Great Britain, South Korea, Turkey, Iran, Indonesia, Singapore, Ukraine and the Baltic countries.

About 36 ginneries operate under the Turkmenpagta State Concern. Raw cotton is grown in five provinces of the country: Akhal, Mary, Lebap, Dashoguz and Balkan.
