The International Conference on Migration, organized by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM), will be held in Ashgabat on June 23-24, the Turkmen government said on May 2.
A preparatory meeting has been recently held at the Turkmen Foreign Ministry.
UNHCR regional coordinator for Central Asia Bernard Doyle and IOM Regional Coordinator for Central Asia Dejan Keserovich attended it, according to the information.
The heads of the Turkmen ministries and departments, accredited diplomatic corps, representatives of international organizations and experts also attended the meeting.
"The purpose of the conference is to support the countries in enforcement policy, resolve important issues in the field of migration and statelessness in line with international standards, exchange of experience and determination of best practice to resolve key regional issues in two areas, namely, migration, based on the final documents of the second high-level dialogue of the UN General Assembly, as well as in the field of statelessness," according to the information.
IOM mission has been operating in Central Asia since 1998, while in Turkmenistan - since 2005. A number of projects have been implemented in this region during this period.
Earlier it was reported that Turkmenistan together with the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees has worked out an action plan to reduce stateless persons in the country.
Turkmenistan is operating to strengthen the national legal framework in this area by joining the UN General Assembly Convention on the Status of Stateless Persons and the UN General Assembly Convention on the Reduction of Statelessness.
The citizenship was granted to more than 3,000 people living in the country and having no citizenship in 2011, according to Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov's decree.
