Iran voices anticipated production volume of sturgeon caviar

BAKU, Azerbaijan, July 22. It is expected that during the current Iranian year (from March 20, 2024 through March 20, 2025), at least 25 tons of caviar and 5,000–6,000 tons of sturgeon meat will be produced from sturgeons reared in cages in 22 Iranian provinces, the official representative of Iran's fisheries organization Nasser Karami Rad said, Trend reports.

According to him, more than 21 tons of caviar and 4,766 tons of sturgeon meat were seized last year (from March 21, 2023 through March 19, 2024) from sturgeon fish reared in cages in 22 regions of the country.

Karami Rad added that a total of 3,593 people are currently working in sturgeon fish farming facilities in 22 regions of the country.

The official noted that it is planned to breed 20,000 tons of sturgeon meat and 140 tons of caviar in the country over the next 10 years.

Karami Rad stated that currently, 2–3 million sturgeon juveniles are released into the Caspian Sea every year. Presently, along with Iran, Azerbaijan, and other Caspian littoral countries, they are carrying out activities on releasing juvenile sturgeons into the Caspian Sea.

To note, over 130 sturgeon breeding facilities are operating in Iran.
