BAKU, Azerbaijan, June 30. Iran is expected to import wheat to address domestic shortages and ensure food security, said Majid Anjafi, Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Trend reports.
Anjafi explained that continued drought across the country, especially in rain-fed farming regions, is likely to reduce the overall wheat harvest. A similar situation occurred four years ago, when the guaranteed procurement volume dropped to 4.5 million tons.
The deputy minister noted that although nearly 12 million tons of wheat were procured from farmers last year (from March 20, 2024, through March 20, 2025), this year’s production may be significantly lower due to decreased rainfall.
Despite the challenges, Anjafi assured that “the supply of essential goods in the country remains stable, and no disruptions are expected in the coming months.”
Wheat has been cultivated on around 6.39 million hectares across Iran this year, including 4.22 million hectares of rain-fed farmland and 2.17 million hectares of irrigated land.
Meanwhile, the government has set the guaranteed purchase price at 205,000 rials (around $0.38) per kilogram for bread wheat and 210,000 rials (around $0.39) for durum wheat for the current year (from March 21, 2025, through March 20, 2026).
Since April 5, over 4.3 million tons of wheat have been procured from domestic farmers.
