Iran takes very slight share from global IT sector turnover, Amir Hossein Davaei, the Islamic Republic's deputy ICT minister said.
Global IT turnover stands at about $3800 billion, meanwhile the figure for Iran accounts for only $6-$7 billion, Davaei said, the ICT ministry reported.
Iran needs new approaches in the IT sector to boost the share, the official added.
The administration plans to support the startups which bring together companies and idea owners, he said.
Davaei referred to successful IT companies in Silicon Valley which brought together idea owners and entrepreneurs to change the idea to a product or service, saying Iran follows this model, to develop its IT sector.
The share of IT in Iran's GDP was 8.4 percent in 2013, according to the ICT ministry.
The figure is planed to reach 11 percent by 2017.
The ICT ministry estimates that software exports share only 0.7 percent of the country's GDP, meanwhile it was projected that the figure reach two percent by the end of the Islamic Republic's Fifth Economic Development Plan 2010-2015.
A report by the Iranian parliament Research Center suggests that the share of software exports from total industrial exports was in decline in recent years.
The figure stood at 1.5 percent in 2005, but declined to 0.73 percent in 2013 and stood at some 0.56 percent in 2014.
