BAKU, Azerbaijan, February 26. National Iranian Gas Company (NIGC) is taking steps to reduce energy loss and carbon emissions that pollute the environment, NIGC Energy and Carbon Management Director Ali-Asghar Rajabi told reporters, Trend reports.
He mentioned that, in this regard, the National Gas Company has prepared several programs. These programs include the development of alternative renewable energy use, reducing flare gas burning, optimizing energy consumption in various sectors, and utilizing market mechanisms.
Rajabi said that, based on a plan prepared by Iran's Ministry of Petroleum, the volume of gas burned in flares in the country should be reduced by 16 billion cubic meters over the next four years. Of this, 3.1 billion cubic meters pertain to the gas sector. Within this framework, the volume of flare gas burned in the gas sector will be reduced by two billion cubic meters.
The official added that three Iranian years ago (from March 20, 2022, through March 20, 2023), 10 million cubic meters of gas flared daily in Iran's gas sector. Two years ago (from March 21, 2023, through March 19, 2024), the gas sector flared 8.8 million cubic meters of gas every day. Since the beginning of this year (from March 20, 2024, to February 24, 2025), 6.8 million cubic meters of gas have been flared in the country's gas sector. This demonstrates a 13 percent reduction in carbon emissions released into the environment by the gas sector.
Iran, with about 34 trillion cubic meters of gas reserves, is the second country in the world in terms of gas reserves. Currently, 22 gas fields are active in Iran, and the country produces 1.1 bcm of gas daily.
