Georgia’s digital hub development is proceeding at a fairly high pace with the support of the World Bank, the Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development Natia Turnava said, Trend reports via Georgian media.
Natia Turnava met with the representatives of the World Bank regarding the current and future plans of the WB’s Log-in Georgia Project, as well as the development of optical infrastructure within the project.
“The construction of fiber-optic infrastructure for high-speed Internet in Ozurgeti Municipality is completed. The next pilot region is Kobuleti, where the process is underway. A tender has also been announced for Racha-Lechkhumi and Kvemo Svaneti regions,” Turnava said.
“According to the plan, the construction of fiber-optic infrastructure will continue, so Georgia’s citizens can use high-quality internet in villages and highland settlements,” the minister added.
“The WB is pleased with the progress made over the past year. This ambitious program ensures digital inclusion in the region. The aim of the project is to provide digital services, digital inclusion in the villages of the regions of the country where there is no internet access today,” the ICT Policy specialist for the World Bank, Charles Hurpy, said.
The WB has already provided Georgia with a $40 million loan within the framework of the Log-in Georgia Project in August 2021.
The project will help connect up to 1,000 villages, including highland settlements, to high-quality and affordable high-speed internet, from which nearly 500,000 people will benefit.
