Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu has instructed the country's Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources to develop a project for construction of the first domestic nuclear power plant, Kanal7 TV channel reported on Oct.22.
He said a number of leading countries have over 100 nuclear power plants, however, Turkey lags behind in this issue.
Davutoglu added that the work on construction of the first domestic nuclear power plant in Turkey will start in 2018-2019.
Earlier, Turkish Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Taner Yildiz said that the construction of Akkuyu nuclear power plant in Turkey will begin in March 2015.
Akkuyu power plant will be built in accordance with a Russian project that envisages the construction of 4 power units with VVER-1200 reactor. The agreement on the construction of the nuclear power plant was signed in May 2010.
The installed capacity of each power unit will be equal to 1,200 megawatt, while the total installed capacity of the power plant will be 4,800 megawatt.
It is planned to put into operation the power units successively, with intervals of one year.
Previously, Yildiz said that despite the different positions of Turkey and Russia on the political crisis in the Middle East, the two countries prioritize the development of economic relations.
He said that first of all the matter rests in the investment worth of $22 billion, which Russia makes in Turkey, including in the construction of a nuclear power plant.
