Turkey suspended the work on extension of the Marmaray railway tunnel, Hurriyet newspaper said citing the Turkish Republic State Railways (TCDD) on Oct. 23.
The suspension was due to the financial problems faced by the Spanish company OHL, which earlier won a tender for laying the railroad bed and contact lines in the tunnel.
Earlier, it was planned that the work on increasing the Marmaray tunnel's length will be completed in 2015, but then the completion of this work was postponed for an indefinite period.
It was previously reported that the Marmaray railway tunnel will be extended by 62 kilometers.
The Marmaray railway tunnel, which links the Eastern and European part of Turkey, was commissioned on October 29, 2013.
The railway tunnel is 14 kilometers long. The total number of passengers transported through the tunnel in both directions will stand at 1.2 million people a day.
Both passengers and cargos are transported through the Marmaray railway tunnel.
