NATO does not recognize presidential elections held on Aug. 26 in the Georgian region of Abkhazia, press statement of the Alliance said.
"The holding of such elections does not contribute to a peaceful and lasting settlement of the situation in Georgia. The Alliance reiterates its full support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia within its internationally recognized borders", NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen was quoted as saying.
Vice-President of unrecognized Republic of Abkhazia Alexander Ankvab took a decisive victory in the elections, gaining the 55 percent of votes.
Three presidential candidates - Alexander Ankvab, Raul Khajimba and Sergei Shamba - ran the in the elections.
Over 70 percent of voters took part in the elections, which about 100 observers observed.
