BAKU, Azerbaijan, November 21. Azerbaijan and Russia were the largest senders of incoming rail freight to Georgia in the third quarter of 2025, accounting for 32% and 29.1% of total volumes respectively, the country’s statistics office said, Trend reports.

As such, other countries combined contributed 38.9%.

Outgoing freight from Georgia was headed primarily to Armenia (22.1%), Kazakhstan (11.6%) and Russia (6.3%), with the remainder distributed among other destinations.

Transit freight, which represented 58.1% of the total 3.5 million tonnes of rail cargo in Q3, was largely destined for the Netherlands (16.2%), Türkiye (10%), China (7.2%), Italy (2.9%) and Ukraine (2.4%). Brazil accounted for 9.2% of transit cargo sent through Georgia, followed by Türkiye at 2.6%, with other countries making up the rest.

Domestic shipments represented 9.5% of total freight, while international (excluding transit) cargo made up 32.4%. Overall rail freight in Georgia fell 1.4% compared with the same period in 2024, underscoring the country’s continuing role as a strategic transit hub linking Europe, Asia and the region.
