One of Libyan leader Moamer Gaddafi's sons, who owns a luxury house in Munich, has been warned he will be not be allowed back into Germany, officials said Friday.
Saif al-Arab Gaddafi, 29, who was reportedly sent to eastern Libya last month to attempt to put down the uprising there, was previously enrolled at a Munich university, dpa reported.
Munich officials confirmed a news report that he had retroactively informed German authorities that he had not been officially resident in Germany since February 15. It remained unclear if that was the actual date of his departure.
The unrest in Libya started on February 15.
The Bavarian state interior minister said authorities had cancelled the younger Gaddafi's German residence permit, meaning he could not return without a visa. Following European Union sanctions, Berlin would refuse to issue any new visa.
Germany requires all residents to register their place of domicile. The ex-student's file now says he has transferred his domicile to an unknown address in Libya, a ministry spokesman said.
Saif is believed to have lived in Munich since 2006. He was able to obtain semi-permanent residence last year by proving he had an annual income above a German threshold of 66,000 euros (91,000 dollars). He owns a house in an affluent suburb.
He has been investigated by German police over allegations of assault and arms smuggling, but was never prosecuted.
