U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asia Richard Boucher Sunday telephoned Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to express continued support to the Bangladeshi government and its people for their response to the tragic aftermath of the Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) mutiny.
In the telephone conversation on behalf of U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Boucher lauded the Bangladeshi government's efforts to assist the survivors, honor those who were killed, and bring those guilty to justice, Xinhua reported.
Boucher stressed the importance of national unity during this crucial time and encouraged all Bangladeshis to work together to overcome the national tragedy.
A release from the U.S. Embassy here said Boucher emphasized, in particular, the importance of cooperation between the government and the opposition to resolve the crisis. He reiterated the United States' willingness to render all possible assistance to the Bangladeshi government.
Thousands of BDR soldiers staged revolt against their army officers on Wednesday, leaving at least 82 dead, out of whom 64 are army officers, and 71 army officers are still missing. The revolt came to an end on Thursday evening after a series of negotiations between the rebel soldiers and government officials.
