Vice-Speaker Mikheil Machavariani became general secretary of the ruling party United National Movement.
Machavariani succeeds Zurab Melikishvili in this position. This decision was taken at a meeting of the Political Council of National Movement.
"Zurab Melikishvili had been working as Secretary General for four years. During these years the party has achieved considerable success in parliamentary elections, in elections to local government and the Supreme Council of Adjara. Party had considerable success in the international arena, United National Movement has become a member of the European People's Party" the statement said.
Machavariani is a strong player during campaign and election periods. UNM expects a difficult struggle in the parliamentary elections in Georgia in the autumn of this year. The main rivals of the ruling party, is generally would be the opposition coalition of a billionaire Bidzina Ivanishvili "Georgia Dream".
