BAKU, Azerbaijan, July 23. Azerbaijan's food imports increased by 6.9 percent ($73.054 million) in value terms to $1.1 billion from January through June 2024, Trend reports.
According to the State Customs Committee of Azerbaijan, the country imported 26,460 tons of meat (23.69 percent growth) worth $58.62 million (44.92 percent growth), 6,600 tons of milk (8.54 percent growth) worth $10.3 million (20.41 percent reduction) during the reporting period, 13,500 tons of dairy products (up 58.91 percent) - $71.044 million (up 51.1 percent), 223,400 tons of vegetables and fruits (up 18.49 percent) - $158.312 million (up 29.3 percent), and 6,570 tons of tea (up 6.78 percent) - $33.5 million (up 2.26 percent).
Furthermore, Azerbaijan imported more than 484,710 tons of wheat, corn, and rice worth over $144.8 million.
Imports of vegetable fats and oils amounted to 80,680 tons worth more than $95.7 million.
To note, Azerbaijan's foreign trade turnover from January through June 2024 decreased by 16.81 percent, or $4.3 billion, compared to the indicator for the same period in 2023 (from $26.1 billion to $21.7 billion).
In the structure of foreign trade turnover, exports accounted for $12.9 billion, down $5 billion, or 28.2 percent, from the same period last year. The share of exports in the foreign trade turnover amounted to 59.27 percent, up from 68.67 percent a year earlier.
Meanwhile, Azerbaijan's imports in the reporting period increased year-on-year by $668.7 million, or 8.16 percent, from $8.1 billion to about $8.8 billion. The share of imports in the foreign trade turnover amounted to 40.73 percent, up from 31.33 percent a year earlier.
Consequently, the balance of foreign trade turnover, while remaining positive during the period under review, declined year-on-year by over $5.7 billion, or 58.71 percent, to $4 billion against $9.7 billion in the 2023 reporting period.
