The construction of small hydropower stations on the rivers is being considered in Kazakhstan, chairman of board of the Kazakh 'Samruk-Green Energy' LLP Zhomart Mominbayev told Trend.
"Currently, five rivers, flowing through the territory of Kazakhstan and the most favorable for the construction of hydroelectric power stations, are being examined," he said. "These are the Ili, Shelek, Syr Darya, Black Irtysh, Charyn rivers."
"The construction of small hydropower stations in Kazakhstan is advisable as the country's rivers have great hydro potential," he said.
"The construction of a cascade of a hydropower station on river Shelek is being examined," he said.
Besides the abundant hydrocarbon reserves, 60 percent of the territory of Kazakhstan has the potential for using solar, wind and river energy.
"We must deal with the development of alternative energy sources," Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev said earlier.
He set new tasks to the government of the country.
Samruk-Green Energy LLP was established in 2012. It operates in the field of energy production by using renewable energy sources.
Its portfolio at various stages has more than 20 projects related to the development of wind and solar energy, as well as the development of small hydropower stations, biogas energy and energy efficiency.
