An Iranian lawmaker said the country has brought thousands of hectares of land in Brazil and some neighboring nations for corn cultivation.
“Due to water scarcity and low precipitation periods, the government is pursuing a plan to grow agricultural products in other countries,” IRNA news agency quoted Yousef Davoodi, a member of Iranian Parliament’s Agriculture Commission, as saying on June 5.
We are now doing that in “Brazil and some neighboring countries”, he said.
Cultivating products like corn in other countries can be effective in helping control Iran’s red meat and poultry market, he added.
Iran is suffering from a water crisis and corn is a water-intensive crop, Davoodi said, noting that therefore we should grow crops like corn in other countries.
By cultivating crops abroad, Iranian farmers, in fact, lease the land from the foreign country and then we would import our farmers’ products, the Iranian MP further explained.
Brazil is the largest country in both South America and the Latin American region. It is the world’s fifth largest country, both by geographical area and by population. It is also the largest economy in Latin America, the world’s seventh largest economy at market exchange rates and the seventh largest in purchasing power parity (PPP), according to the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank. Brazil has a mixed economy with abundant natural resources. The Brazilian economy is expected to become one of the five largest in the world in the decades to come. Brazil’s diversified economy includes agriculture, industry, and a wide range of services. The country is also one of the largest producers of oranges, coffee, sugar cane, cassava and sisal, soybeans and papayas.
Iran-Brazil economic and diplomatic relations are cordial. Tehran and Brasilia signed a document to bolster cooperation during the G-15 Summit in Tehran in 2010.
