BAKU, Azerbaijan, July 31. Italian Edison S.p.A is developing a project for a second offshore liquefied natural gas (LNG) storage facility in southern Italy and plans to construct a second LNG tanker for bunkering operations, Executive Vice President Gas Assets Fabrizio Mattana said, Trend reports.
Edison already operates the Ravenna coastal LNG storage facility as part of the group's integrated supply chain.
“Yesterday, the company successfully conducted its first LNG bunkering operation on the Adriatic Sea in the port of Trieste,” Mattana said.
Italy is expanding its gas storage capacity and is among the largest consumers of gas from various sources, including Azerbaijan, within the EU.
A year ago, an LNG storage regasifier was commissioned in Piombino (Livorno province), complementing existing LNG receiving and regasification systems in Panigaglia (La Spezia), Rovigo, and the area between Livorno and Pisa.
Snam, the Italian gas distribution company responsible for operating gas transportation networks, has repeatedly expressed its intention to expand the capacity of its 13 gas storage facilities. Additionally, the company plans to establish new storage facilities to ensure adequate gas reserves in the country.
