The Teleradio production association under the Azerbaijani Communications and IT Ministry, is examining the opportunity of the population receiving a digital television signal, the association told Trend on Feb. 5.
Currently operations are being conducted in Baku and regions of Azerbaijan. The final results will be presented to the Cabinet of Ministers, the association said.
"Turning off an analogue television signal is scheduled for 2014," the association said. "A digital TV signal covers 97 percent of the population. Currently, a list of villages where new digital TV transmitters will be installed has been prepared and the matter rests in remote settlements."
Currently, a social package, consisting of 12 channels is available to the population of the country's regions. Digital content is broadcast in MPEG- 4 format. Subscribers must buy decoders for the transition to digital broadcasting.
The cost of these devices on the domestic market is 25-30 manat. The decoders are manufactured at the KUR and PEYK plants.
The official exchange rate is 0.7843 AZN/USD on Feb. 6.
