BAKU, Azerbaijan, September 3. The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) is considering a loan allocation for a new project aimed at improving the water supply and sanitation system in the city of Ganja, Trend reports.
According to the EBRD, within the framework of the initiative, it is expected to provide a sovereign loan of up to 370 million euros, with the approval date scheduled for November 6, 2024.
Furthermore, the funds will be used for the reconstruction of water supply, sewerage, and stormwater drainage systems, as well as for the construction of a new wastewater treatment plant.
The project is implemented under the EBRD's Green Cities Program and is aimed at addressing one of the priority environmental issues - water availability and quality, as stipulated in the Green City Action Plan for Ganja.
Once the project is completed, it is expected that the entire city of Ganja will be provided with uninterrupted water supply and drainage services. Flood risks will also be reduced through the introduction of a stormwater management system. Moreover, the project will have a significant positive environmental impact on the region by treating wastewater before it is discharged into the Ganjachay River.
The project promotes the concept of “green transition” by improving water supply, reducing water losses, and ensuring adequate wastewater treatment in Ganja. The project is also expected to contribute to strengthening corporate governance by developing a customized action plan in this area.
The total project size is estimated at 370 million euros, of which 365 million euros is provided in the form of a loan from the EBRD. It is expected that part of the financing will be provided by international donors in the form of grants.
The project will be implemented in several phases and will include a wide range of investments in Ganja's water supply and sewerage system. At the moment, the environmental and social expertise of the project is being conducted. The first phase of the project includes the rehabilitation of the water supply and sewage network, as well as the creation of a stormwater management system. Additional phases, including the construction of a wastewater treatment plant, will require further expertise and public discussion.
The project also includes the provision of consulting services and the development of action plans to improve corporate governance and the successful implementation of the project.
