The Air Traffic Management Department “Azeraeronavigation” (AZANS) of CJSC Azerbaijan Airlines (AZAL), part of AZCON Holding, marks the 30th anniversary of its operations. Over this period, AZANS has followed a consistent path of development in managing the country’s airspace, forming a modern, safe, and efficient air navigation system.

Azerbaijan’s location at the intersection of major air transport corridors connecting Europe and Asia is one of the key factors defining the country’s strategic role in the global air transport system. Against the backdrop of recent regional developments, this position has been further strengthened, and Azerbaijan’s airspace has emerged as a reliable transit route for international aviation.

This trend is clearly reflected in the statistical indicators of recent years. The number of flights increased from 80,880 in 2021 to 342,167 in 2025, demonstrating a significant expansion of the country’s role in the global air transport system.

Particularly notable is the growth in overflight. Since 2021, the volume of overflights through Azerbaijan’s airspace has increased by 360%. Within this context, daily transit traffic in the Baku Flight Information Region (FIR) has reached up to 830 flights on peak days, highlighting the increasing operational intensity.

At the same time, the intensity of airspace utilization has also increased significantly. The flight density indicator, which stood at 0.49 in 2021, rose to 2.07 in 2025, demonstrating more efficient use of available resources.

At the same time, the role of AZANS in opening the airspace over the liberated territories should be particularly noted. Within a short period, air navigation infrastructure in the region was restored, a new route network was established and integrated into international air navigation systems, thereby ensuring the prompt restoration of air transport connectivity.

Despite the increasing operational workload, AZANS ensures safe and uninterrupted air traffic management through modern automated Air Traffic Management (ATM) technologies, advanced digital solutions, and an optimized airspace structure. The effective functioning of these systems is supported by highly qualified personnel and continuous professional training. AZANS places particular emphasis on enhancing employees’ knowledge and skills, conducting training in accordance with international standards, and developing human capital.

In addition, AZANS demonstrates high performance in operational efficiency and service quality. The accuracy of aeronautical information stands at 100%, its timeliness at 99.6%, and system reliability at 100%.
