Thousands of Syrians loyal to the regime of President Bashar al-Assad gathered Thursday in the capital Damascus, dpa reported.
Official television showed footage of thousands thronging Damascus' main square as they carried pictures of al-Assad and waved the national flag.
According to the broadcaster, around one million people are expected to take part in the rally that coincides with the first anniversary of a popular revolt against al-Assad's rule.
