ASTANA, Kazakhstan, April 16. In an effort to dramatically enhance the standard of air travel in the nation, Kazakhstan is progressively introducing a Performance-Based Navigation (PBN) system, Trend reports.
The project is being carried out by the Republican State Enterprise "Kazaeronavigatsia" in accordance with recommendations from the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).
“PBN relies on the use of modern satellite technologies and precise navigation standards. This enables the construction of more direct flight routes, which shortens flight times, reduces fuel consumption, and consequently lowers CO² emissions. All of these are steps toward the sustainable development of Kazakhstan’s aviation sector,” the Ministry of Transport of Kazakhstan stated.
The modernized air traffic structure not only enhances flight safety but also increases the capacity of the airspace.
“The introduction of PBN is an important step in the digital transformation of Kazakhstan’s air navigation sector. It will not only improve safety levels but also ensure compliance with the most advanced international standards,” said Nurzhan Akhmetov, Director General of "Kazaeronavigatsia."
Currently, PBN procedures have been implemented in the terminal airspace of the airports in Astana, Almaty, Aktau, Atyrau, Ust-Kamenogorsk, and Usharal. In 2025, the system is expected to expand to the airports in Balkhash, Zhezkazgan, Kyzylorda, Urdzhar, and Shymkent. By 2030, the scope of coverage will be augmented to encompass an additional 12 airports nationwide.
