BAKU, Azerbaijan, August 13. Uzbekistan and Japan have discussed plans to expand cooperation in the peaceful use of nuclear energy, including joint projects in nuclear technologies and related sectors.
According to Uzbekistan’s Uzatom Agency, the discussions were held during a meeting at Uzatom with a Japanese delegation comprising representatives of Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), the Japan Organization for Metals and Energy Security (JOGMEC), and ITOCHU Corporation.
The Japanese delegation was headed by Abe Eimitsu, Deputy Director of the Office for International Cooperation in Nuclear Energy at METI. The sides discussed prospects for joint projects in nuclear technologies and related industries, as well as cooperation in strengthening energy security and exchanging experience in the peaceful use of nuclear energy. Abe Eimitsu noted Japan’s readiness to continue cooperation with Uzbekistan in the nuclear energy sector.
"We highly value the consistent reforms carried out under the leadership of the President of Uzbekistan aimed at modernizing the economy and developing the energy sector. Japan is ready to continue fruitful dialogue and cooperation with Uzbek partners in the field of peaceful use of nuclear energy based on mutual respect and common interests," he said.
Uzatom noted it will continue efforts to expand international cooperation with countries and organizations that have expertise in peaceful nuclear technologies.
Uzbekistan’s cooperation with Japanese partners in the nuclear field has been developing over a long period. ITOCHU Corporation implements agreements on the supply of uranium concentrate with Navoi Mining and Metallurgical Company, while JOGMEC participates in the development of uranium deposits.
In December 2025, during the visit of Uzbekistan’s President Shavkat Mirziyoyev to Japan, the sides confirmed prospects for expanding cooperation, including in the export of critical minerals and the introduction of advanced technologies.
