BAKU, Azerbaijan, August 15. The U.S. Department of State has notified Congress of the extension of Azerbaijan’s waiver from the restrictions imposed under Section 907 of the Freedom Support Act.
According to the official congressional record, the State Department submitted the relevant document to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on July 28 and to the House Foreign Affairs Committee on August 10.
Section 907, adopted in 1992, restricts the provision of U.S. assistance to Azerbaijan. In 2001, Congress granted the U.S. president authority to waive its application.
Since then, U.S. presidents have annually extended the waiver and notified Congress accordingly.
