The World Olive Council, together with the Minister of Agriculture, and International Olive Council, have come up with a strategy on how to develop the olive sector in Georgia and how to distribute the products on the world market, Giorgi Svanidze, the President of the International Olive Council, said, Trend reports via Georgian media.

With the support of the Georgian Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, under the auspices of UNESCO and the International Olive Council, the 114 sessions of the International Olive Council and the 57 sessions of the Advisory Board were held in Georgia.

“International Olive Council controls 90 percent of the world olive income and 74 percent of the trade. Therefore, being in this organization is a step forward for Georgia,” Giorgi Svanidze said.

Supporting the cultivation of olives is part of Georgia's agricultural development strategy and it has great potential due to Georgia's climatic conditions, Levan Davitashvili, the Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture said.

“With the co-financing and support of the state, olive plantations have already been cultivated on an area of up to 1,000 hectares in Georgia. Our plan is to cover several tens of thousands of hectares of olive groves in the nearest future, which will allow us to increase our export opportunities,” the minister added.
