BAKU, Azerbaijan, February 20. In January 2025, road transport in Azerbaijan was the name of the game, handling a hefty 55.7 percent of the 18.4 million tons of cargo and a staggering 87.9 percent of the 157.2 million passengers ferried by economic entities in the transport sector.
The data obtained by Trend from the Azerbaijan Land Transport Agency shows that 10.2 million tons of cargo and 138.2 million passengers were transported during the reporting period, marking a 9.8 percent increase in cargo and an 8.4 percent rise in passenger numbers compared to January 2024.
"Buses constitute the primary means of transportation in Azerbaijan, comprising 95.7 percent of passenger use, although taxis account for 4.3 percent. The nation has experienced a significant rise in passenger traffic, with bus utilization increasing by 8.8 percent and taxi ridership augmenting by 0.5 percent. The favorable outcomes indicate the effective upgrade of Azerbaijan's automobile transport infrastructure, coupled with initiatives to improve service quality and streamline transportation operations. The implementation of digital technologies in the land transport industry, the launch of new buses, and continuous road enhancements have been instrumental in fostering substantial increase in both passenger and freight traffic," the agency said.
In 2021, a public legal entity Azerbaijan Land Transport Agency was established under the Ministry of Digital Development and Transport. Azerbaijan Land Transport Agency regulates road transport, meets the needs for road transport and other road transport services in the Republic of Azerbaijan, controls compliance with the rules and requirements related to international and domestic passenger and cargo transportation, as well as provisions of regulatory legal acts of the Republic of Azerbaijan in this field and international treaties to which the Republic of Azerbaijan is a signatory.
