ASTANA, Kazakhstan, February 19. Kazakhstan climbs in global internet speed rankings, boosted by telecom infrastructure developments, Trend reports via the Ministry of Digital Development, Innovations and Aerospace Industry of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

The analytical company Ookla has published the updated internet speed rankings for January 2025. Kazakhstan has significantly improved its performance. In the mobile internet category, the country rose by 8 positions, ranking 49th. The average download speed was 81.58 Mbps, the upload speed was 18.42 Mbps, and the latency was 18 ms. In the fixed broadband internet segment, Kazakhstan improved its position by 5 points, ranking 83rd with an average download speed of 77.93 Mbps, an upload speed of 80.83 Mbps, and a latency of 5 ms.

This result became possible due to the implementation of government programs and the efforts of telecom operators in developing telecommunications infrastructure. In 2024, fixed-line networks were modernized, 4G coverage was expanded, and 5G deployment began in major cities. This contributed to a significant increase in internet speed, enabling Kazakhstan to strengthen its position in the global ranking.

As part of the national project "Affordable Internet," from 2025 to 2027, the following is planned: Implementation of the project "Providing broadband access to rural settlements through fiber-optic communication lines," covering 3,010 villages; Subsidizing the "last mile" internet connection to households in 1,120 rural settlements; Further development of 5G in cities of national significance and regional centers; Launching satellite internet for over 250 remote and sparsely populated areas.

The growth in internet speed plays a crucial role in the country's digital transformation, the development of the IT sector, online education, e-commerce, and other key areas of the economy. The development of telecommunications is one of the Ministry's top priorities. The department will continue working to improve communication and internet access throughout the country.

To note, Ookla is a leading international company specializing in the analysis of internet connection speed and quality. It is well known for its Speedtest service, which allows users to measure download, upload speeds, and latency. Ookla publishes the monthly Speedtest Global Index, which compares the average mobile and fixed internet speeds across various countries based on real user tests. Data is collected anonymously through Speedtest and reflects the actual state of internet infrastructure worldwide.
