BAKU, Azerbaijan, September 5. European natural gas output fell sharply in June 2025, marking the eighth consecutive month of year-on-year decline, according to the latest Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF) outlook, Trend reports.
Production dropped 8.4% compared with June 2024, to 13.5 billion cubic metres (bcm), largely due to lower volumes from Norway.
The fall was partly cushioned by higher output from Türkiye, as production from the Sakarya gas field in the Black Sea continued to ramp up. The UK and the Netherlands also recorded slight year-on-year increases, while EU monthly production stood at 2.2 bcm, led by the Netherlands and Romania.
For the first half of 2025, Europe’s cumulative gas production reached 91.3 bcm, down 6% from the same period a year earlier. This level is only marginally above the lowest output recorded in the past five years, in 2021.
Norway, which accounts for nearly 65% of Europe’s total production, remained the main driver of the decline. The UK and the Netherlands also posted notable reductions. Looking ahead, Denmark is expected to contribute positively in 2025, supported by the ramp-up of the Tyra gas field.
The GECF noted that the region’s output trajectory points to a negative outlook for European gas production for the full year.
