Some 37,000 tons of grapes have been processed in the Kakheti region of Georgia as of September 4, Trend reports with reference to the Georgian National Wine Agency.
According to the data, 10,300 tons of Saperavi grapes, 22 thousand tons of Rkatsiteli, 1,800 tons of Kakhuri Mtsvane, as well as a small number of grapes of other varieties have been processed.
“As of September 4, 2020, up to 4,000 tons were processed in Kakheti, which is almost nine times less than the amount of currently processed grapes,” the report said.
In 2020, the country harvested and processed up to 280,000 tons of grapes, which is a record. More than 25,000 farmers donated grapes, their income amounted to 310 million lari ($99.3 million).
In order to support wine farmers, the Georgian government decided to subsidize two grape varieties - "Rkatsiteli" and "Kakhuri Mtsvane", which are mainly grown in Kakheti. Some 100 million lari ($32 million) has been allocated for subsidies.
