More than 80 percent of Azerbaijan's population accounts for internet users, the press service of the Ministry of Transport, Communications and High Technologies told Trend on Jan.19.
According to the service, in order to meet the demand of citizens for telecommunication services in the country’s districts, Aztelecom LLC under the ministry is working to expand the communication network, gradually implementing infrastructure projects. In addition, trunk and distribution networks are being modernized.
"Given the growing needs to increase the volume of traffic transmitted to the districts, DWDM technologies were applied - wavelength division multiplexing, which allows simultaneous transmission of several information channels over one optical fiber at different carrier frequencies, and IP-MPLS multiprotocol label switching. As a result, the throughput of the trunk lines has been increased 100 times," the service said.
The press service also touched upon the ongoing project of the distribution network reconstruction.
"Within the project’s initial stage, work is being carried out in Absheron and Masalli districts, the cities of Sumgayit and Ganja. Within the framework of this project, copper lines are being replaced with optical cables, GPON technology (Gigabit Passive Optical Network is a gigabit passive optical network). Besides, the quality and quantity of services provided to citizens is increasing. At the next stage it’s planned to carry out the work in other districts, as well,” the service pointed out.
Over the past period, along with the above works, new electronic automatic telephone exchanges were installed and commissioned in the urban centers and villages of Aghstafa, Gazakh, Gakh, Ismayilli, Gadabay, Gabala, Gusar, Bilasuvar, Goygol and Aghjabadi districts. Work continues on expanding the coverage area and increasing the existing capacities, added the source.
