As many as 400,000 off-record immigrants are working in Iran’s labor market, a report by Mehr News agency said.
The report said that nearly 4,000 individuals cross Iran’s borders illegally every 24 hours.
According to Iran’s labor law, undocumented immigrants are not allowed to be part of the country’s workforce, the report added, noting that centers without work permit will be closed soon.
Only 50,000 people out of nearly 400,000 have obtained their permits and the rest are unregistered and are mainly Afghans.
Iran has been giving refuge to about a million registered Afghan migrants and another two million unregistered ones for almost four decades, according to the estimates.
More than 350,000 Afghan refugee children are now in school in Iran while some 48,000 undocumented Afghan children were allowed in 2016 to enroll for the first time in Iranian public schools.
