Export of Georgia's hazelnuts in September 2021 increased by 22 percent and amounted to 4.2 million kilograms, compared to 3.4 million kilograms over the same period of 2020, Trend reports via EastFruits.
The September 2021 exports amounted to $24.5 million, which is 23 percent increase, compared to September 2020, when the industry was recovering from pest invasions.
This improvement is caused by an unprecedented increase in the export of inshell hazelnuts. However, Georgia usually earns more on hazelnut kernels. Both the cost and the volume of hazelnut kernels exports has been about 11 times higher than inshell hazelnuts exports over the past 3 years.
According to Georgian exporters, Italy has shown high demand for inshell hazelnuts, due to decreased local harvest this year, and therefore, a shortage of supply in the Italian market.
Hazelnuts in shell are intended for the manufacturing sector, so there are no strict requirements for nuts of the highest quality. Thus, export prices for hazelnuts in the shell increased by 7 percent, compared to September 2020.
Exports of hazelnuts in shells to Italy in September 2021 amounted to $6.1 million or 2.3 million kilograms. The value of exports is 400 percent more than in 2020, the volume also increased by 367 percent.
