BAKU, Azerbaijan, January 26. Freight transportation at the Astara rail border terminal in Iran’s northern Gilan province is expected to increase to 3million tons per year in the next two to three years, said Jabbar Ali Zakeri, the Deputy Minister for Roads and Urban Development of Iran, Chair of the Board and President of the Railways of Iran (RAI), Trend reports.

Speaking to reporters, Zakeri mentioned that currently, the Azerbaijani side (Azerbaijan Railways CJSC) has increased freight transportation at the Astara terminal to one million tons annually.

Zakeri also highlighted that the rail connection between Iran and Russia is currently established via Azerbaijan, noting that Azerbaijan has significantly improved the quality of its railway lines in recent years.

Additionally, Rovshan Rustamov, Chairman of Azerbaijan Railways CJSC, and Jabbar Ali Zakeri discussed the expansion of the freight terminal in Astara and ongoing work at the facility during the meeting of the Azerbaijan-Iran Intergovernmental Commission in Tehran on January 23.
