ASTANA, Kazakhstan, April 3. The Senate of
Kazakhstan (upper house of the Parliament of the Republic of
Kazakhstan) has ratified the Protocol of Amendments to the
Agreement on the Eurasian Group on Combating the Laundering of
Criminal Proceeds and Terrorism Financing (EAG), Trend reports.
The document expands the powers of the EAG, supplementing them with
measures to prevent the financing of the proliferation of weapons
of mass destruction. It also clarifies key definitions, regulates
the organization’s operations, and sets out the procedure for
forming its budget.
“The adopted amendments will strengthen control over financial
flows, increase the effectiveness of international cooperation, and
ensure Kazakhstan's compliance with the FATF (Financial Action Task
Force) standards,” the document states.
At the close of 2024, Kazakhstan turned the tables in the Basel Institute’s Anti-Money Laundering Index, racking up 4.65 points on the scale (with 10 being the highest risk). This leap put it ahead of heavyweights like the United States, Japan, Singapore, China, Qatar, Italy, Hungary, and Türkiye.
