BAKU, Azerbaijan, August 13. The number of transit trucks passing through the Bazargan border terminal, located on Iran’s border with Türkiye, increased by 19% in the first four months of the current Iranian year (March 21 through July 22, 2026) compared to the same period last year.
This was announced by the country’s Ministry of Roads and Urban Development, citing Deputy Minister Reza Akbari’s remarks at a meeting held to review the operations of the “Bazargan” border terminal.
“The Bazargan border terminal is of particular importance for the transit of the country’s imports and exports and is showing growing performance,” he said.
Akbari noted that, in accordance with the current decision, the capacity of the Bazergan border terminal is to be increased to 1,000 trucks per day. Numerous discussions have been held with the Turkish side on this matter. As a result of these discussions with Turkey, the number of cargo shipments processed at the Bazergan border terminal increased to 404 over a specific period.
The organization’s representative added that a comprehensive development plan for this border terminal has been approved, and a contractor has been selected. Once construction begins, most of the necessary infrastructure for the border terminal will be in place.
“The physical development of the Bazargan border terminal, the coordination of working hours between the two countries, the streamlining of border procedures, unified management of truck inspections, and a reduction in cases of unjustified detentions can play an effective role in enhancing the transit and trade potential of this border terminal,” he noted.
Akbari stated that it is important to separate commercial, passenger, and local traffic flows at this border terminal. Given the Bazargan border terminal’s prominent position at the national and international levels, it is necessary to utilize its existing potential to ensure the swift and unimpeded passage of trucks.
According to the official, alongside ongoing negotiations and coordination between Iran and Türkiye, infrastructure work is actively continuing. Thus, the Bazargan border terminal should fully realize its potential as Iran’s most important land gateway for trade with Europe.
Meanwhile, the Bazargan border crossing (Gürbulaq on the Turkish side) between Iran and Türkiye is considered one of the main transit points for trade between the two countries.
