BAKU, Azerbaijan, April 28. The total assets of banks in Azerbaijan amounted to 54.9 billion manat ($32.3 billion) in the first quarter of this year.
Data obtained by Trend from the Central Bank (CBA) shows growth of the banking sector's total assets by 2.4 percent or 1.3 billion manat ($764.7 million) during the reporting period.
During this period, the total liabilities of the banking sector increased by 2.6 percent or 1.3 billion manat ($764.7 million), reaching approximately 48 billion manat ($28.2 billion), while the equity capital rose by 1.2 percent or 81.7 million manat ($48.1 million), reaching 6.9 billion manat ($4.1 billion).
Meanwhile, during the reporting period, the banks' loan portfolio increased by one percent or 284.8 million manat ($167.4 million), reaching 27.9 billion manat ($16.4 billion).
The structure of the loan portfolio is as follows:
ı) business loans – 53.6 percent (14.9 billion manat or $8.8
billion);
ıı) consumer loans – 30.9 percent (8.6 billion manat or $5.1
billion);
ııı) mortgage loans – 15.5 percent (4.3 billion manat or $2.6
billion).
Moreover, 66.4 percent of physical persons' deposits (9.8 billion manat or $5.8 billion) accounted for national currency, while 33.6 percent (4.9 billion manat or $2.9 billion) - foreign currency. Besides, 61.1 percent of physical persons' deposit portfolio (nine billion manat or $5.3 billion) consists of term deposits. In March 2025, the term deposits of physical persons increased by 2.3 percent or 204.7 million manat ($120.1 million). The demand deposits of legal entities amounted to 16.8 billion manat ($9.9 billion), which made up 74.5 percent of the total deposit portfolio of legal entities.
The dollarization of physical persons' deposits decreased by two percentage points in March 2025 compared to the same month last year, reaching 33.1 percent.
From January through March 2025, Azerbaijani banks achieved a net profit of 253.3 million manat ($149.6 million) and operational profit of 402.7 million manat ($236.8 million). In the first quarter of this year, the banks paid a total of 61.7 million manat ($36.2 million) in profit taxes.
