ASTANA, Kazakhstan, August 6. Kazakhstan has begun dredging work at the seaport of Kuryk to develop the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route (TITR, or Middle Corridor), Trend reports, citing the Ministry of Transport of Kazakhstan.
Thus, specialized dredging equipment from a large European company, Jan de Nul, was brought in to carry out dredging work. An EPC contract was signed with the company, from design to turnkey dredging work.
As the Ministry of Transport noted, dredging will create conditions for further expansion of terminal capacities.
"These works are part of comprehensive measures taken as part of the development of the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route and will make it possible to service the growing needs for the transportation of goods on this route," the ministry said.
Similar work will also be carried out at the port of Aktau.
Today, the throughput capacity of the Kuryk port is 6 million tons (railway terminal - 4 million, car terminal - 2 million). The port also has the ability to simultaneously store 250 trucks.
The Middle Corridor is a transportation and trade route that connects Asia and Europe, passing through several countries in the region. It is an alternative route to the traditional Northern Corridor and Southern Corridor.
The route starts in China and crosses Central Asian countries such as Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan. It then passes through the Caspian Sea, Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Türkiye before reaching Europe.
The Middle Corridor offers a land route that connects the eastern parts of Asia, including China, with Europe, bypassing the longer maritime routes.
