BAKU, Azerbaijan, March 17. The total volume of Azerbaijani gas transported through the Trans-Anatolian Gas Pipeline (TANAP) since its operation has reached 76.1 billion cubic meters (bcm) as of March 1, 2025, Trend reports via SOCAR.
According to information, the breakdown of gas deliveries is as follows: 44.4 bcm have been transported to Europe, and 31.7 bcm to Türkiye.
TANAP, part of Azerbaijan's Shah Deniz field’s second stage, transports natural gas from the Georgia-Türkiye border to Türkiye’s western border. The total cost of the TANAP project is less than $7 billion.
The initial transport capacity of TANAP is 16 billion cubic meters per year, with plans to expand this capacity to 31 billion cubic meters. Approximately 6 billion cubic meters of gas are delivered to Türkiye, while the remaining gas is sent to Europe.
Construction of TANAP in Türkiye began at the end of January 2018, and the pipeline was officially launched on June 12, 2018, in Eskişehir. The first commercial gas delivery to Turkey began on June 30, 2018. The opening of the connection between TANAP and Europe took place on November 30, 2019, in the town of İpsala, Edirne.
Further expansion of TANAP’s transmission capacity requires the installation of several additional compressor stations. To increase the capacity to 31 billion cubic meters, a total of seven compressor stations will be necessary.
Currently, the possibility of transporting a hydrogen mix through the TANAP pipeline is being explored. Technically, TANAP can transport natural gas with a hydrogen share of up to 2 percent.
The TANAP system is expected to operate until 2062.
