ASTANA, Kazakhstan, May 23. Kazakhstan has repelled more than 796 million cyberattacks on information systems of state bodies since the beginning of the year, said Yermek Sagimbayev, Chairman of the National Security Committee, during the meeting with the President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, Trend reports.
At the meeting, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev listened the a report on the main results of the agency’s work since the beginning of the year and instructed the agency for the upcoming period.
The report indicates that 43 people have been convicted for involvement in terrorism and religious extremism, and pre-trial investigations are underway for another 34 individuals.
In the fight against organized crime, the activities of 13 criminal groups were disrupted. A total of 142 individuals involved in these groups were detained, with 40 placed under arrest. Authorities also confiscated a substantial cache of weapons, including 282 firearms, 48 grenades, and 4,586 rounds of ammunition. As part of ongoing efforts to counter drug-related offenses, 12 illegal drug production laboratories were dismantled. Law enforcement successfully eliminated 13 international and 12 regional drug trafficking channels, seizing over 3.2 tons of narcotics and 7.5 tons of precursor chemicals.
Anti-corruption initiatives resulted in the exposure and cessation of illegal activities involving 15 officials from various government and law enforcement bodies. These efforts helped prevent damage to the state budget totaling 1.6 trillion tenge (approximately $3.2 billion), with 220 billion tenge (around $440 million) already reimbursed to the state.
In the area of border and cybersecurity, more than 16,000 border violators were apprehended, and 3,025 individuals were expelled from the country. Authorities prevented over 600 smuggling attempts involving weapons, ammunition, narcotics, and other banned goods. Additionally, attempts to illegally transport 11 billion tenge (about $22 million) in currency and goods valued at 16.6 billion tenge (approximately $33.2 million) across the border were thwarted.
Following a review of these results, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev issued a series of instructions aimed at strengthening the effectiveness and coordination of national security operations across all sectors.
