BAKU, Azerbaijan, September 26. Azerbaijan's Azerenerji OJSC is conducting a repeat tender as part of the project to establish the nationwide 250 MW battery energy storage system (BESS), Trend reports via the company's announcement on the state procurement portal.
The purpose of the tender is to select a company to prepare the preliminary design and tender documentation, as well as to develop technical specifications for determining the optimal location, preliminary design, and construction of the battery energy storage system in Azerbaijan’s energy system.
Companies wishing to participate in the tender can submit their proposals by 10:00 (GMT +4) on October 18, 2024, and the tender procedure will take place later that day.
The total planned storage capacity will be created in stages by 2027, with the first 50 MW of storage capacity set to be in place by the end of 2024 or early 2025, which is the reason for Azerenerji's tender.
Commenting on the issue, Business Development Director of ACWA Power Azerbaijan Polina Lyubomirova mentioned that 200 MW of the planned total battery storage capacity relates to ACWA Power's project in Azerbaijan, while the remaining 50 MW belongs to another company.
On May 3, 2024, Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Energy and ACWA Power (Saudi Arabia) signed an implementation agreement for a 200 MW battery energy storage system.
“Currently, ACWA Power is at the stage of technical and commercial evaluation for the 200 MW battery energy storage system, clarifying battery types and other aspects,” Lyubomirova explained.
The use of batteries with a capacity of 63 MWh/126 MWh is being considered.
Overall, the establishment of such energy storage systems in Azerbaijan will allow for the accumulation of energy from renewable energy sources, which are being rapidly developed in the country.
To note, by 2030, the share of renewable energy sources in the country’s total energy balance will reach 35 percent, almost doubling from the 2024 level.
