BAKU, Azerbaijan, March 11. Azerbaijan’s Araz Hydropower Plant (HPP) generated 5,044 kWh of electricity in January 2025, the country’s State Energy Service of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic told Trend.
In the previous fiscal cycle, the facility produced a total output of 65,705 kilowatt-hours of electrical energy.
The Araz HPP, located on the Araz River—Azerbaijan's second-largest river—is situated five kilometers downstream from the point where its left tributary, the Nakhchivan river, joins, on the border between Azerbaijan and Iran.
The facility, engineered for a nominal output of 22 megawatts, initiated its commissioning phase on October 3, 1971, achieving full operational status by 1973. The system demonstrates the capacity to generate an impressive 86.7 million kilowatt-hours of electrical output on an annual basis. Throughout the years, the Araz HPP has been instrumental in addressing the energy requirements of the populace and bolstering the national economy. The facility, designated as a medium-pressure installation, functions utilizing a closed-loop architectural design.
