BISHKEK, Kyrgyzstan, May 22. The foundation stone has been laid for the construction of a cascade of small hydropower plants (HPPs) and supporting infrastructure in the Kara-Suu district of Kyrgyzstan’s Osh region, Trend reports via the Cabinet of Ministers of Kyrgyzstan.
The project includes the launch of construction on four small HPPs — Kurshab-1, Kurshab-2, Kurshab-3, and Kurshab-4 — by MGM Group LLC, with a total installed capacity of 9 MW.
Moreover, construction of the concrete production plant and a power transmission and distribution substation has also been in the village of Yntymak.
Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers, Adylbek Kasymaliev, took part in the official groundbreaking ceremony. He noted that Kyrgyzstan currently consumes 18 billion kWh of electricity annually, while domestic production stands at 14.7 billion kWh, with the remaining 3.6 billion kWh being imported.
“Small hydropower plants are a clean and sustainable energy source. In addition to major projects like the Kambarata-1 HPP, we are expanding the use of smaller-scale plants to meet growing demand and reduce imports,” Kasymaliev said.
He added that the concrete plant in Yntymak will accelerate local construction through advanced continuous pouring technology. “To ensure the timely setting of concrete, it is essential to establish such plants close to construction sites,” he said.
The estimated cost of constructing the four HPPs and substation is 870 million soms ($9.9 million), while the concrete plant is being financed through 70 million soms ($800,457) in private investment.
During the same visit, Kasymaliev also launched construction of a battery production facility in the village of Otuz-Adyr. With an estimated investment of 452 million soms ($5.1 million), the plant will produce batteries, solar-powered lighting equipment, and both low- and high-voltage power lines.
